You don't need another video on the Circle of 5ths.

You need a fresh way to think about putting notes together.

"I find myself constantly falling back on the same chord progressions. It makes my tracks sound so repetitive and predictable, and I'm struggling to make them stand out."

"I feel lost when trying to construct interesting melodies. I know what I want to hear, but I don't always know how to get there technically."

"I can come up with one really cool section, but then have no idea how to make another section that doesn't just sound like a whole different song. Or it sounds too similar to the first section and gets repetitive."

What if there was ONE solution to help you:

  • Come up with infinite, interesting CHORD PROGRESSIONS that feel coherent but not predictable
  • Write MELODIES that can stand on their own, but also work seamlessly with your chord progressions
  • Write cohesive ARRANGEMENTS through understanding which harmonic languages you are using

NONFUNCTIONAL Harmony was created over a century ago to address many of the issues we still face today.

It was born when composers grew tired of the predictability of Functional Harmony.

And yet, most of the videos I see only focus on naming chords or learning the circle of 5ths. While this kind of theory has its place, we need a fresh, new way to think about harmony which is far more practical and useful.

Harmony can be the glue that holds your melodies, chord progressions, and entire arrangements together. Or it can be the weak link that causes your tracks to sound erratic and disjointed.

Whether you're a hobbyist or a professional, a deeper understanding of harmony will allow you more creative freedom to create impactful, cohesive music.

I'll teach you WHY the rules of Functional Harmony exist, how Nonfunctional Harmony was born as a result, and how we can apply concepts from BOTH in our own music.

I don't know of any other resource that teaches harmony from this perspective, so I've built this video course to help:

  • Teach you the basic fundamentals of Functional Harmony and how to actually USE those concepts when writing music.
  • Introduce you to Nonfunctional Harmony and how we can use it to make our music less predictable and develop our own "sound."
  • Teach you to voice chords and chord progressions to feel smooth and seamless.
  • Help you develop a consistent harmonic language so your tracks feel more coherent and impactful without being cliche.
  • Show you how harmony directly relates to melody writing, so you can come up with melodies that are fresh, interesting, and have direction and purpose.

Here's what the early enrollees are saying...

"I am currently only at module 3.2, but already I have learned so much.

With the growing concerns over AI, I would definitely recommend this course to those who want to survive and to those who want to create something lasting and meaningful."

- Willem V.

"Nathan has a refreshing vision of composing music. A method hardly ever highlighted (certainly not on YouTube). He conveys complex topics in a way that is inspiring and easy to understand.

This course has opened up a whole new world for me."

- Joep W.

"If you want to learn about writing or indeed listening to music critically, this is an excellent foundation.

Nathan is an excellent teacher!"

- Alexander J.

"These lessons are very liberating!

Fantastic course. Like Rick, I'll go through parts of it as I have time and remind myself of those 'aha' moments.
Thank you for producing this and sharing your wealth of knowledge in such a clear manner."

- Steve W.

"I have no previous knowledge of this material… other than going through the previous course “Composition Concepts for Artists“.

After completing this course, I now have knowledge of the material, but no practice yet. Now it’s up to me.

Thank you again, Jameson for putting together an informative and well thought- out course."

- Rick R.

Trying to decide if the course is right for you?

What's actually in this course?

In-depth video tutorials that demonstrate specific harmonic concepts and languages that have impacted my own music and compositional style the most.

Are there other resources included besides the videos?

Yes, I've included downloadable MIDI files, as well as notated examples to accompany each video. This way, you can have a visual representation of what you're hearing regardless of whether you read music or not.

With the MIDI files, you can drag examples into your own DAW and experiment with the exercises we discuss immediately.

There are also musical examples featuring many pieces of music that demonstrate the specific concepts shown in each video.

Do I need to have an advanced knowledge of music theory to benefit from this course?

I won't mislead you, I go deep in this course and pull no punches.

However, I've attempted to make this as accessible to musicians of all backgrounds as possible.

If I use a term you may not be familiar with, I explain it immediately. Rather than teaching arbitrary "rules," I'll explain WHY those guidelines are in place and what we can learn from them and apply in our own music.

To put it plainly, NO, you don't need an extensive theory background to gain valuable insights from this course. However, you will gain the MOST from it if you do have some knowledge of the fundamentals.

"From my first time working with Nathan, the rapport was instant. I really appreciate how genuine he is, and how completely honest his opinions are when it comes to working on music. We've collaborated on several projects, and he does not stop until the job is done. I've learned a great deal working with him, and would recommend him to anyone."

- BP Moore, recording artist/composer

"When I finished my vocal Album, and needed a producer and second set of ears I could trust, my first thought was Nathan, because of his immense experience in both classical and ambient directions.

Nathan brought a deeper sound quality, more emphasis and light or darkness to the character of the music that was already there. He gave it a new dimension and made the pieces have a third dimension; he enabled each piece to achieve its best quality."

- Maire Awadis, pianist, recording artist, composer
